Atomic Love 2
Rev. Bryan Kim

There is a memorial hall dedicated to the memory of Reverend Yang Won Son located in Ham-an District in Kyung-nam Province that we were heading toward. I was not too eager for I had just visited the ‘Aeyangwon’ in Yeosu city and did not expect anything different. I believe that the first book I read after maturing to a certain extent in the faith was ‘Atomic Love’. He was a man that regarded the murderer of his son as an adopted son. Even as he lost his two sons during the Yo-Soon Revolt of 1948, he still wrote out 9 different thanksgiving letters which I read in the past, but still makes my heart race by the shock that still resides within me. However, for me, I still feel like a culprit in comparison realizing that the respect he commands places him on a much higher pedestal. I do not know if it was solely due to that feeling, but I was able to recall a testimony by Dong Hui Son, the daughter of Reverand Yang Won Son. It had been said that the most difficult thing that Dong Hui Son had to endure was not only losing her two older brothers by a murderer, but having to call that murderer a brother as well and live in the same house. Love like an atomic bomb is great, but this was ludicrous for her as she felt a disheartening toward her father whom she could not understand. Everyday was like hell for this yet to mature daughter. When I heard this story ten or so years ago, the almost unapproachable application of love moved everyone that heard it deeply, but for her, she admitted it was too cruel and this left a bitter aftertaste in my mouth.

While reminiscing upon these things, we finally arrived at the memorial hall founded upon his birthplace. It was hard not to be struck in awe as a contemporary rounded art museum was the first thing we saw. The building was constructed and fundraised for Reverend Yang Won Son, a patriot whom brought his hometown to light. On the side of the museum, the original hometown of his past was perfectly preserved. Inside the museum, the timeline of his life was clearly on display while the one hundred person capacity smaller auditorium emitted a neatness within the contemporary architecture of the museum. For a short briefing, our group sat within the small auditorium while a man in his fifties grabbed the microphone, introducing himself as the museum curator. “Welcome all, I am the curator of this museum. My name is Pastor Kyung Sun Ahn. I am the son of Reverend Yang Won Son’s adopted son, Pastor Jae Sun Ahn.” He bowed, respectfully, a ninety degree bow, but I was still stricken with shock. I knew that the adopted son of Reverend Yang Won Son became a pastor, but I also knew he lived his life in hiding. As I felt during Dong Hui Son’s testimony, as long as the book ‘Atomic Love’ existed, he was a sinner that could not lift his head as he walked. He did not reveal to his own family his identity as he urged his son, the curator, to go ahead and enter seminary. He figured out the reason only after it was discovered that he was Reverend Yang Won Son’s grandson. I was left speechless for a while as he also confessed that he will be leaving soon as a missionary to minister to and care for lepers in Burundi, Africa. It was a moment for me to bend my knee in front of the power of the Gospel. ‘Atomic Love,’ exploded again.
