A Lightening Prayer
Rev. Bryan Kim

For the first time, I ascended toward our retreat center without a particular reason. Whenever I had gone previously, it was always due to ministry, and within that busyness I had never had the opportunity to really fully enjoy my surroundings. This time, however, without a particular ministry responsibility, I decided to visit our retreat center to pray. I felt secure and comfortable as I gazed down upon Lake Elsinore as the crisp cold wind would blow. It was a welcoming feeling as I continued to watch the lake, wondering if the ‘sea of glass’ in Revelation was similar. I felt as though I could hear the Lord speaking, ‘well done,’ to me as he was spiritually massaging my shoulders when previously I would be running around to and fro due to a busy life. The room where we led our ‘1 night getaways’ was neatly organized. I kneeled alone on the wide hardwood floor. The soft whispers of my praise would fill the entire room. The song-like prayer sounded a sonorous shout in my ear. As if a closed door was opening, with the sound of my prayers, those doors seemed to open wide again. I was able to see things buried inside deep within me. As I pulled them out, one by one, my prayer intensified. I was surprised as to how much baggage I had within me, as if I was preparing to immigrate. All of a sudden, I reminisced to the time I tearfully prayed at Chun-ma Mountain’s retreat center. Chun-ma Mountain’s retreat center belonged to my home church in Korea. It was where I devoted myself fully to become a servant of the Lord. I prayed even more deeply as those memories of tearfully accepting my path into seminary infused with my present, for I didn’t know any other way to devote myself fully to the Lord.

I felt lighter. It wasn’t like old times, but I still felt like I emptied myself out. But as I felt my protruding belly, I knew I still had more to lose. Many years ago, in Korea, as I was undergoing medical examinations, I was diagnosed with having a fatty liver and the doctor told me to lose weight. I feel because I haven’t been praying my liver got filled with oil. Perhaps I should continue to pray harder and empty myself even more.

Whenever I used to pray, I always prayed for my ‘work.’ I prayed with the purpose of starting with prayer, pursuing with prayer and ending with prayer. Even now, this trend continues. However, I realized that it’s important to pray even when there’s no ‘work’ to pray for. I discovered that that’s the key to lightening and freeing your body and mind. Prayer does not simply exist to distinguish a victory or failure in ministry, there is an overwhelming secret to prayer. Prayer is more urgent than any urgent business, and it’s more important than any problem at your door. Do not simply pray when there’s something you need to pray about, rather kneel down and pray for the sake of praying, and you’ll experience a lightening effect similar to what I have experienced.
